12 string guitar strings on a 6 string guitar?

Hi, i just bought an acoustic guitar, and the people at GC threw in a free pair of strings, the only problem is that the strings they put in the bag are A’Addario light 12 string guitar strings. Is there anyway i can use these strings on my 6 string guitar?

Um, sure, you can use those strings, but only half of them.

Just as the strings are numbered on a 6 string with the 1st string being the high E and the 6th string being the low E, a 12 string set is also numbered.

You would use the strings 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 but you would NOT be able to use the remaining part of the set to restring the guitar again.

One caveat with D’Addario… make sure that you use the correct strings based on the color of the “ball” at the end… pay close attention to the labeling.
