Help to start learning to play electric guitar?

I live in New York, and I've been playing piano for some time for me to read the notes. I am interested in learning to play electric guitar … can anyone point me in the right direction? Of maybe where to look for buying guitars and amps not so expensive and some reference books or learning materials? Thanks!
